3D Game – Learning by Doing

by StSanto on December 22, 2008

The most boring part of school time is when a dreadful teacher delivers his lecture on how to conduct the best practice. Don’t you remember that? Seriously,… he was talking about best of best, something that supposed to be golden key, something that is supposed to be interesting and exciting, and there he went with big book on his left arm and marker on his right hand, pushing his glasses that kept sliding down and spoke with soft voice that only the first few rows could listen. Well, maybe he didn’t want to disturb students who were sleeping on back rows.

This teacher is not just a pain for the students, it’s even more painful for school that has to pay him big buck per hour, beside his travel and accommodation expense. Imagine a perfect world where students are excited to learn and the cost of learning is minimal. Well, it is not really perfect world now, but we have something for that. What can be more exciting for students than playing games? And I’m talking about normal students just like I was, not those nerds that always wear winter clothes. I used to have unfinished Diablo on my right hand and boring business lecture on my left hand. Lucky you current students… now you can have both playing and learning on one hand.

INNOV8 is one of the example of how 3D game is used in learning environment. It’s created by IBM, one of our major clients, and according to them:

INNOV8 is an interactive, 3-D business simulator designed to teach the fundamentals of business process management and bridge the gap in understanding between business leaders and IT teams in an organization. This type of serious gaming – simulations which have the look and feel of a game but correspond to non-game events or processes such as business operations – has emerged as a successful method to train students and employees and accelerate the development of new skills.

In the rising of new media and network capabilities, more and more learning provider realizing this. On business side, it is obvious that there is a beautiful painting of ROI when your market is excited. On learning and training side, it is obvious that efficient knowledge dissemination happens when the target is engaged and focuses on the subject. Then it is obvious that either the objective is for financial profit or purely resource development through training, this way of learning is cool!

On our side, this is not really a new thing. Few years back we created a game that educates user about network security solutions. For the last few months our 3D knights are developing a virtual technology centre that would give the experience of exploring real life solutions in a virtual world. I should say the excitement of creating these 3D worlds is in par of using it. And as we are looking forward to more creative and smart use of 3D technologies in delivering your messages, maybe it’s time for you to ponder too, how you can make your audience excited, as excited as the kid next door with his playstation or xbox games.
